SCHOOL-BASED THERAPY, ASSESSMENT AND TRAINING

Supporting Students for a Lifetime of Success

Students who are mentally healthy are more likely to arrive at school prepared to learn, participate actively in classroom activities, form supportive and caring relationships with adults and other students, apply the right problem-solving techniques, display nonaggressive behaviors, and contribute to a positive school climate. The Layne Center for Therapy, Education, and Assessment aids in the development of mental health initiatives in schools.

CBT-SMART (School Mental Awareness and Resilience Training) Program

  • Developed for Comprehensive Student Support
Created by Dr. Corey Milsap at the Layne Center for Therapy, Education, and Assessment, the CBT-SMART Program (School Mental Awareness and Resilience Training) is a pioneering initiative designed to build resilience and promote mental health awareness in schools. The program’s mission, “Building Resilience, One Thought at a Time,” guides its holistic approach.

  • Core Skills for Lifelong Resilience
The CBT-SMART Program equips students with essential life skills such as emotional regulation, social skills, cognitive strategies, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Through structured sessions grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy, and positive psychology, students learn to recognize and reshape negative thoughts and behaviors.

  • Multi-Tiered Student Support Structure
The program’s three-tiered framework provides varying levels of support, including daily classroom instruction, biweekly small group sessions, and individual counseling tailored for students with additional needs. This comprehensive approach fosters a supportive environment where students can develop practical coping strategies, emotional regulation techniques, and social skills.

  • Monthly Celebrations of Growth and Achievement
A unique element of the CBT-SMART Program is the RISE Bash, a monthly event that celebrates student achievements. Featuring skill demonstrations, awards, and interactive activities, the RISE Bash invites parents and teachers to witness student progress, building a community of support that extends beyond the classroom.

  • Ongoing Progress Monitoring and Real-Life Application
To ensure sustainable progress, the program includes regular progress monitoring and monthly workshops for parents and teachers. This holistic support system encourages consistent skill development, with practical scenarios—such as peer mediation and group projects—allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts.
